  • Explore the forest's 155 miles of streams and rivers as they wind through the famous Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey. The best paddling is along the Oswego, Wading, and Batsto rivers, where you can camp overnight (permit required).
  • Hike a portion of the 50-mile Batona Trail, one of the Garden State's best-kept secrets that winds through three New Jersey state parks and plenty of boggy, piney wilderness.
  • Mountain-bike more than 30 miles of hard-packed sand roads (plus some singletrack), including a fun five-mile beginner's loop and a short kids' starter trail. Look out for the Jersey Devil, a mythical creature that's said to eat local cattle and mountain bikers! For trail info, check with the Jersey Action Riders.
  • Hike through cedar swamps, bogs, and pine heaths, where you may spot bald eagles, ospreys, great blue herons, owls, swans, and hummingbirds. Wharton State Forest has more than 500 miles of trails, with countless wildlife-viewing opportunities.

Wharton State Forest

Wharton State Forest is the largest single tract of land within the New Jersey State Park System. It is also the site of Batsto Village, a former bog iron and glassmaking industrial center from 1766 to 1867 that currently reflects the agricultural and commercial enterprises that existed here during the late 19th century.
