Monongahela National Forest Freshwater Fishing Travel Tips

  • The Monongahela National Forest is unmatched trout country. It contains most of West Virginia’s trout waters and thereby most of the state’s trout, including rainbow, brown, and golden rainbow trout, as well as the native brook trout (the state fish).
  • Use the shoreline, a boat, waders, and/or an expert outfitter to enhance your trout-seeking luck in such waters as the Cranberry, Williams, Elk, Potomac, Cheat, and Greenbrier rivers; Glady Fork; Otter Creek; Shavers Fork; and Sherwood, Buffalo, and Summit lakes.
  • “The Mon” is also popular with anglers for its superb smallmouth bass fishery, especially on Sherwood, Summit, Spruce Knob, and other lakes, as well as for its plentiful stocks of bluegill and various other panfish that inhabit many small streams.
  • Be sure you know West Virginia’s fishing licensing and regulations, including creel and size limits, what places and fish are off-limits, and catch-and-eat versus catch-and-release restrictions. Also study the state’s recommendations about eating fish taken from waters containing certain pollutants.
  • Each spring, the Mon is host to three special “fishing derbies” that provide children with opportunities to learn firsthand about fish and fishing. These supervised events are held at Summit Lake, the Horseshoe Recreation Area, and the Bowden Fish Hatchery.
