Monongahela National Forest Horses and Riding Travel Tips

  • If you have your own horse, take advantage of equestrians having almost free rein in the Monongahela National Forest, where horses are welcome almost everywhere—other than in Cranberry Glades, a few other special areas, and campgrounds and picnic areas.
  • As an essentially rough-and-ready riding venue, "the Mon" is best suited for experienced equestrians who have well-trained horses and are open to taking the Forest Service's advice about which roads and trails to use—and also which precautions to take.
  • Not owning a horse doesn't mean you can't ride. Although the Mon has no stables, there are local outfitters that offer guided rides ranging from hour-long introductory jaunts to all-day excursions that'll give you some rewarding vistas and a workout.
  • Take advantage of horse camping being permitted and explore the Mon's remote areas on horseback. Be sure to practice Leave No Trace when encamped and on the trail (scatter droppings, for example), and keep your horse from trampling the trail's downhill edges.

Monongahela National Forest Overview

Mo-non-ga-he-la—it's fun just to say. But it's more fun to go there. This national forest is located within a day's drive of much of the east coast, but it remains secluded and quiet, with ample opportunities for the visitor to escape crowds. Country roads are often gravel and encourage slow driving. Restaurants, motels, and other services are found in the many scattered, small communities throughout the forest. Read More
