Gauley River National Recreation Area Birdwatching Travel Tips

  • Foaming whitewater is not the only thing to be seen on the move in and around the Gauley River National Recreation Area (NRA). As many birders now know, more than 200 bird species have been spotted there (albeit not simultaneously).
  • In the warmer months, the NRA and nearby parklands are a-twitter with many species, ranging from kinglets to eagles. In colder weather, migratory waterfowl, as well as shorebirds, can be spotted on Summersville Lake and the Gauley and New rivers.
  • Attend the annual and popular New River Birding and Nature Festival, in May, to go on fascinating field trips that include "Birding by Boat" excursions, "Birding by Butt" van trips, and 12-hour "Hard Core Birding Days" (100 species are possible).
  • Spend time in the New River Gorge looking for aerial evidence of the success of the peregrine falcon reintroduction program that has already sent 30-plus juveniles back into the wild wearing satellite transmitters that can be monitored by the researchers.
