Delve into the forested hinterlands of the Canaan Valley area for some choice mountain-biking trails, including the rolling 22-mile Canaan Loop, which serves up canyon-rim views, stream crossings, and some fun side hikes. For a challenge that’s a bit more technical, try the 18-mile Limerock Trail down into Blackwater Canyon (near Thomas, West Virginia). Davis-based Blackwater Bikes rents rigs and has trail maps.
Ski or snowboard the 37 runs at Canaan Valley Resort, one of the better ski hills in the Mid-Atlantic region. A good mix of beginner, intermediate, and expert trails offer something for everyone, and there's a terrain park for the groms to get into some airboarding.
Cross-country ski on ten miles of trails at Blackwater Falls State Park. Most of these trails are groomed specifically for skinny skiing, and there's a full-service cross-country ski center that offers lessons and rentals.
