  • I'm looking for a central campground to Seneca Rocks, Dolly Sads, Cass Scenie Railroad and Blackwater Falls. Is this too much to ask for? I like Lake Sherwood Rec Area but feel it is too far south to make these day trips worthwhile. I wonder about Sturat Rec area. I should mention that I prefer flsuh toilets and a shower. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

  • I met a wonderful woman from VA. We would like to meet in WV. I have a flat water canoe and we have no experience with white water. I enjoy canoe camping out of sight of civilization and other campers. Could you recommend places?: Near the shortest route between us, I77 and the WV Turnpike from VA to Ravenswood. Trips of varying duration - flat water? - for flexibility. No whitewater we couldnt handle. Beautiful remote mountains, preferably a protected area. No high traffic. Back country camping. Places to safely stage vehicles unless its an all flat water circuit. Nearby access to shopping and a nice restaurant. Really nice, e.g., like the POV in Parkersburg, would be great. I want to surprise her with the perfect trip - with most of these criteria and few hassles so we can concentrate on each other. Are there any romantics there willing to help?

Practical Advice

  • Rising to the Challenge

  • How to Build a Snow Cave

Ask ten people how to make a snow cave and you'll get ten different answers. Winter-survival expert Greg Davenport, 49, ends the debate. Here's his definitive guide to making a bomber backcountry bunker.
  • What Andrew McLean, Ski Mountaineer, Brings
    outside
McLean, 47, is one of the world's most accomplished backcountry skiers, with first descents on every continent—and more than 100 total. This spring, he's off to Greenland for a few more. Here's what he's packing.
  • Playing It Safe
Tout, scam, trickery, pickpockets, or downright theft—any one of 'em can turn a trip of a lifetime into a lifelong lesson. Here's how to avoid bad experiences.
  • Fix a Busted Tire with a Buck
    outside
Flatten your bike tire on a thorn and you can patch the inner tube or swap in a new one—no problem. Damage the tire itself (say, by tearing your sidewall on a sharp rock)—much bigger problem. Here's a quick field solution to keep you on the roll.
