  • When the current is moderate, beginners can practice their dives from the abandoned ferry dock at Titlow Beach.
  • Take note of shallow waters; diving at a higher tide will avoid a walk on slippery rocks.
  • Air and water temperatures drop quickly in cool months.  A dry suit may provide the best protection.
  • Explore the old pier structure, lined with barnacles and teeming with rockfish, black-banded surf perch, and greenling.
  • Keep a lookout—lucky observers could spot a 100-pound octopus.

Tacoma is a city that, in the words of Rodney Dangerfield, "just don't get no respect." For years its industrial image made it the brunt of jokes, many of which centered around the aroma of Tacoma. I'd like to be able to tell you that the skies over Tacoma are always clear and the air is fresh and clean, but it would be stretching the truth just a bit.
