Puget Sound Active and Adventure Travel Tips

  • Take your kayak out to explore a portion of Washington's Cascadia Marine Trail. It extends 140 miles—from Olympia, in South Puget Sound, all the way through the San Juan Islands and up to the Canadian border.
  • For a fun kayak excursion in the south Puget Sound, cross Henderson Bay near the head of Carr Inlet and paddle into Glen Cove. The historic Olde Glencove Hotel, now a bed and breakfast, was built as a resort hotel in 1896 and has been a National Registered Historic Place since 1978.
  • A visit to Cutts Island, a marine state park, is a memorable way to spend the afternoon sea kayaking. For a longer trip, camping is available at the nearby Kopachuck State Park.
  • For wildlife viewing, paddle to Burley Lagoon at the head of Henderson Bay. Jarrel Cove and McMicken Island state parks, on and around Hartstene Island, are also worthwhile destinations.

However, this region is also home to a couple of the state's largest cities—Tacoma and Olympia. While few major attractions are in the area, there is an abundance of natural beauty (with plenty of parks to explore) and, in Tacoma, several interesting museums and attractions as well. Read More
