Shenandoah National Park Horses and Riding Travel Tips

  • Riding a horse is a great way to explore the scenic variety of Shenandoah National Park—and get some exercise. The park's designated horse trails are well marked (yellow blazes), well maintained, and offer 180 miles of equestrian delight.
  • Take one of the leisurely guided trail rides in the central part of the park offered daily—weather permitting—by Skyland Stables. Choose either the one-hour ride or the 2.5-hour ride. Alternatively, treat your children to a pony ride for 15 or 30 minutes.
  • If you have a horse and trailer, plan and take your own trail rides. Check with the park before you set off about the easy-to-find trail access points and applicable regulations. Then head on out, but count on being back by nightfall.
  • To make the most of your equestrian forays, consult the park's excellent list of suggested trail rides and then get going. One option: the 15-mile Rose River out-and-back, on which even your horse will get to see a waterfall.
