Situated on a relatively flat plateau, Wytheville's position in the center of the Highlands has made it a major crossroads since trappers and hunters came to the region in the early 1700s. After a treaty with hostile Native Americans opened Kentucky for settlement in 1775, Daniel Boone built the Wilderness Road through the Highlands to Cumberland Gap. Monroe Street in Wytheville was part of that route, and a few log cabins left over from those days still stand on Main Street.
