  • Choose the beach that best fits your style. The Virginia Beach resort area, with its three-mile boardwalk, bustles with live music, street performers, and outdoor cafés. To the south, Sandbridge offers more seclusion and Chesapeake Bay Beach means a mellower waterfront outing with calm surf.
  • See ancient endangered sea turtles up close at the Virginia Aquarium, also home to seals, otters, rays, an aviary, and an IMAX theater.
  • Head back to nature at any one of the area's remarkable outdoor options, including the 9,000-acre Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge that runs along a coastal strip just south of Virginia Beach; there's also First Landing State Park on the Chesapeake Bay.
  • Tour the world's largest naval base in nearby Norfolk, where you'll pass aircraft carriers, subs, destroyers, an active airfield, and historic homes.

Just as Norfolk has given itself a major facelift in recent years, so has Virginia Beach had a bit of cosmetic surgery. The city's 20 miles of unbroken sand and surf have always lured families from throughout the region to take their annual beach vacations here. Many of them are of modest means, and traditionally the beach takes on a certain "Redneck Riviera" flavor from Memorial Day to Labor Day. But that image is changing rapidly.
