Founded by a group of Scottish tobacco merchants, the riverfront town of Alexandria came into being on a sunny day in July 1749, when a 60-acre tract of land was auctioned off in 1/2-acre lots. Go for dinner at the Dubliner fish 'n' chip shop, followed by a cocktail in the upstairs speakeasy. Wear a jacket, though, to be allowed into the speakeasy, which is also quite small and can fill up quickly.

There's a good kids' playground a couple of blocks east of the Torpedo Factory near the waterfront. Nice place to take the kids if you want to escape the crowds on King Street.

Families (and foodies) will enjoy the crepes and omelets at Bread & Chocolate on King Street. Go there for breakfast on Saturday, then stroll down to the farmer's market at Market Square, which runs year-round on Saturdays from 5 a.m.-10:30 a.m.

Avoid the restaurants by the Old Town waterfront, such as the Chart House, which are overcrowded, overpriced, and underwhelming. Head instead up to the neighborhood of Del Ray (near Bradddock Road Metro) for a nice selection of local eateries including Evening Star Cafe, Fireflies, and Taqueria del Poblano. The Dairy Godmother is a popular locally-owned ice-cream shop there, recently made famous by a visit from local foodie celebrity, President Barack Obama!
