Charlottesville Travel Tips

Walk the quad at the school that Thomas Jefferson built. The University of Virginia offers tours throughout the summer.
Tour the homes of both Jefferson and James Monroe. Monticello, Jefferson's manse, is the more impressive of the two, but both offer a look at the life and times of our Founding Fathers. The President's Pass ($26, November-February; $34, March-October) gives you entry to Monticello; Ash Lawn-Highland (Monroe's estate); and Michie Tavern, where both former presidents dined in the 1780s.
Window-shop along downtown's pedestrian walking mall on Main Street. The brick-paved street features a collection of eclectic stores and outdoor dining options.
Just west of town, you'll find the southern entrance to Shenandoah National Park, home to majestic Skyline Drive, which gives views over the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains.
