Richmond Travel Tips

  • Meander through the Monument Avenue District where you'll see large, elegant homes from the early 1900s as well as monuments to Robert E. Lee and tennis great Arthur Ashe.
  • Tour Tuckahoe Plantation, the boyhood home of Thomas Jefferson, located on the James River about seven miles west of Richmond.
  • Brush up on your Civil War history in the one-time Confederate capital. Must-see spots include the Museum and White House of the Confederacy and Richmond National Battlefield Park.
  • Head over to hip, historic Shockoe Slip, a trading post dating back to the 1600s that has long since become a downtown hot spot for dining, shopping, and nightlife. The district starts at 12th and Cary streets.

Now a sprawling metropolitan area flanking the James River in the center of the state, Richmond has been Virginia's capital since 1780 and has been the stage for much history. It was in Richmond's St. John's Church that Patrick Henry concluded his address to the second Virginia Convention with the stirring words "Give me liberty, or give me death!" During the Revolution, turncoat Gen. Benedict Arnold led British troops down what is now Main Street in 1781 and set fire to many buildings, including tobacco warehouses—in those days, the equivalent of banks.
