Burlington Travel Tips

  • Indulge in the circus arts at Burlington's Festival of Fools in August. It brings jugglers, acrobats, comedians, and other street performers to the Church Street pedestrian mall. Unlike performances the rest of the year, these are hand-picked by a festival curator.
  • Make a trip to the Green Mount Cemetery, where a 35-foot-tall granite monument stands above what many believe is the grave of Revolutionary War hero Ethan Allen, who captured Fort Ticonderoga from the British in 1775. The actual location of his grave is unknown, however, as his grave marker went missing in 1850.
  • Legendary jam band Phish got its start at Nectar's, on Main Street (the band's 1992 album A Picture of Nectar is named for the restaurant). See up-and-coming jam bands at the venue any night of the year.
  • Take a tour; get free stuff. Kids get free storytimes at the Vermont Teddy Bear Company in Shelburne. Groups at Otter Creek Brewing receive free samples of new beers. And at Ben & Jerry's in Waterbury, a 25-minute drive south, free ice-cream cones punctuate the Willy Wonka-esque factory tour.

Burlington is a vibrant college town—home to the University of Vermont, known as UVM—that's continually, valiantly resisting the onset of middle age. It's the birthplace of hippies-turned-corporation Ben & Jerry's. (Look for the sidewalk plaque at the corner of St. Paul and College sts. commemorating the 1st store.)
