  • International Mountain Guides hosts a six-day ice climbing seminar in Valdez, which is surrounded by the heavily glaciated Chugach Mountains. The combination of moist air coming off the ocean and rising abruptly over the mountains and the cool, but not arctic, climate makes for incredible ice climbing and downhill skiing.
  • If you are an experienced climber and want to go it on your own, try Mineral Creek. You can get to Mineral Creek from Valdez by driving or walking up Hazelet Street, making a left on Hanagita and a right on Mineral Creek Drive. You might need to wear knee-high rubber boots, although sometimes the stream is frozen over.
  • Aventuras Patagonicas runs expeditions of guided ice climbs and ice climbing seminars in Valdez, Alaska. A mecca for ice climbing, Valdez offers a paradise for multi-pitch climbing on water ice. Valdez often has been described as the "best ice climbing place in America," with hundreds of ice climbs in its vicinity.
