Valdez-Cordova Freshwater Fishing Travel Tips

  • Pink, Silver, and the occasional Sockeye salmon make it to the freshwater streams and rivers surrounding Valdez. Most of the fresh waters of Prince William Sound and the Cordova area are open all year to salmon fishing. Check the current regulation booklet carefully, though, before heading out to fish because some waters are closed. Bears are numerous in the Cordova area, and anglers should use caution when fishing salmon spawning areas.
  • Every spring, Rainbow trout and Arctic grayling are released into Worthington and Blueberry lakes in the Thompson Pass area off the Richardson Highway and in Ruth Pond in downtown Valdez. Hit Clear Creek for a chance at hooking some grayling—it is the only Cordova-area flowing water where they can be reliably found, though some may be found on the Copper River Delta as well.
  • Dolly Varden are available in most of the Valdez-area streams and rivers throughout the year. Lake fishing for sea-run Dolly Varden can be good from late August through November. The fish begin entering lakes in late August and are in prime condition after their spring and summer growing seasons. Cordova’s Eyak Lake and its tributaries offer the best Dolly Varden fishing, but most roadside streams and lakes also will do the trick.
  • Cordova’s road system consists of a 50-mile unpaved road between town and the “Million Dollar Bridge,” which crosses the Copper River at Miles Lake. Try Clear Creek, Ibeck Creek, and the Eyak River for salmon, trout, and Dolly Varden.
