Moab Hiking and Backpacking Travel Tips

  • Corona Arch and Bowtie Arch Trail takes you to a pair of large but very different arches in about three miles roundtrip. The trailhead is on the right, ten miles down the Colorado River on UT 279 from US 191.
  • Negro Bill Canyon offers pleasant hiking in a desert oasis. Turn up the second side canyon on the right to admire the 243-foot span of Morning Glory Arch, a four-mile roundtrip from the trailhead on UT 128 northeast of Moab.
  • Fisher Towers Trail, 4.4 miles roundtrip, gives you a close-up look at spires of dark-red sandstone that soar as high as 900 feet, and then ends at a viewpoint. The trailhead is 25 miles northeast of Moab off UT 128.
  • Journey back 150 million years to Jurassic time on the Mill Canyon Dinosaur Trail. Drive 15 miles northwest on US 191 to just past Milepost 141, then turn left across railroad tracks, and go two miles on a dirt road.
  • La Sal Mountains, 15 miles southeast of Moab, offer an extensive trail system and many off-trail routes in Utah's second-highest range. Six peaks rise above 12,000 feet. La Sal Mountains Loop Road makes a scenic 62-mile loop from town.

Moab

Located just four miles from Arches National Park and 45 miles from Canyonlands, this small town in southeastern Utah offers visitors an amazing array of activities set against a Martianesque backdrop of impressive canyons, towers, and arches. Moab is flanked to the east by the La Sal Mountains, which rise beyond 12,000 feet. The cool, green high-country terrain offers a refreshing contrast to the desert wilds below. With a generally mild climate and unexpected environmental variety, Moab is a magnet for year-round outdoor adventure. Read More
