Salt Lake City Travel Tips

  • Visit the temple in the heart of downtown whether you belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or not. Complimentary tours run in 40 different languages.
  • Shred it up in Big or Little Cottonwood canyons, just 15 minutes from downtown. Big Cottonwood is home to snowboarder-favorite Brighton and family-friendly Solitude. Little Cottonwood houses the ultra-steep Snowbird and the skiers-only Alta.
  • Forget about joining the club. Utah's wacky liquor laws were overhauled in July 2009, to the effect that the Utah Legislature no longer requires clubs and bars to charge their customers a "membership" fee for entry.
  • Float in the buoyant waters of the Great Salt Lake, but beware the huge black brine flies that feed on the lake's brine shrimp. Antelope Island is usually a safe bet to avoid them.
  • Wander around the outdoor Gateway mall, west of downtown. It's Salt Lake's most recent addition and home to numerous shops and restaurants.
