Punta del Este Beach Travel Tips

  • Remember, Uruguay is in the southern hemisphere, so American winter is summer there. The high season is late December through February with an extremely high and expensive season between Christmas and the middle of January. You'll find less crowded beaches in late November and March.
  • There are two main sides to the beaches of Punta del Este—the calm bay, or river, side that stretches along the Rio de la Plata, and the ocean side that overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and is known for having rougher waves. The river side tends to attract families on vacation, whereas the rougher ocean side attracts young, single people. It's also where water sport sites tend to be located.
  • If you stay in the very center of Punta del Este, you can walk to nearby beaches and you'll have access to a lot of restaurants. However, if you stay in other areas, a rental car is recommended. Taxis and busses exist but can be unreliable.
  • Beach areas are marked by bus stop numbers called Paradas. For instance, people might tell you that Parada 4, on Playa Mansa across from the Conrad Hotel, is their favorite beach area.
  • Streets in Punta are also labeled with either names or numbers, depending on your map. For example, the main street, Inzaurraga, is also called Calle 31, and Avenida Gorlero also goes by Avenida 22. Many shops and hotels don't have complete addresses, but indicate what street intersections they are near. Before venturing out try to get as much information as possible about a location, including landmarks.
  • Paradores are the name of the beach bars that dot the coast. Each has a different characteristic and clientele, and many are also full-service restaurants. They are a welcome retreat from sunbathing and other beach activities, and a chance to socialize with locals and other beachgoers.

Beach Overview: Punta del Este, Uruguay

Punta del Este has reigned as one of South America's most glamorous beach destinations for the past several decades. The most important movie, television, and fashion celebrities of Buenos Aires descend on the city, particularly during the short period between Christmas and the middle of January, creating an intense, vibrant scene, known as the temporada (season). Most beachgoers in Uruguay are from neighboring Argentina, but the city Punta del Este has recently been discovered by American and European tourists. December through February is generally the high season, while November, March, and April make up the shoulder season, when costs drop significantly. Read More
