  • Journey from old to new by strolling from St. Paul's Cathedral to the Tate Modern over the futuristic Millennium Bridge. Shakespeare's Globe Theatre is nearby; or make a day of it by continuing west along the South Bank of the Thames as far as the British Airways London Eye and Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament which are on the opposite side of the river.
  • Not only one of London's top attractions, the British Museum is also one of its few free museums, meaning you can go back as many times as you want. With the savings you pocket, you'd be advised to take a guided highlights tour (admission charged) to enjoy the best of the exhibits and artifacts.
  • Buy an Oyster card to save some money as you're hopping on and off buses and the Tube. You can buy pre-charged cards ahead of time online to save yourself time.
  • Don't spend all your time in Zone 1. Neighborhoods like Putney, Greenwich, Finsbury Park, Muswell Hill, or Hampstead Heath all offer a different cultural perspective on the country's buzzing capital.
  • Escape the downtown crush by taking a day to explore leafy Richmond or go for a walk through the parkland surrounding Windsor Castle. Hampton Court Palace is another royal abode that's worth the schlep by train or river ferry along the Thames.
  • In summer, think outside the venerable pub beer garden. Join the locals in a rooftop watering hole like the Roof Gardens in Kensington, the Trafalgar Hotel overlooking looking Trafalgar Square, or the Coq d'Argent in the City of London's financial district.
