Glasgow Travel Tips

  • Glasgow's cultural offerings run the gamut from fine art at the popular Burrell Collection and Kelvingrove Art Gallery to more edgy fare at the Gallery of Modern Art. Big-name rock bands perform regularly at the SECC and Barrowlands Ballroom.
  • Football, aka soccer, is a national obsession in Scotland, and Glasgow is the powerhouse of the game here. If you can, watch city rivals Rangers (in blue) and Celtic (in green) square up, or catch the national team play at storied Hampden Park (tours and museum also available).
  • Glaswegians love to drink and party, so there is no shortage of good pubs and clubs. And, contrary to popular belief, the food is not all haggis and deep-fried Mars bars. Top places to eat include the Ubiquitous Chip, Stravaigin, and The Buttery, all with local flavors and flair.
  • Glasgow is a much bigger city than Edinburgh, so plan on taking buses, cabs, or trains to get to some of the more far-flung attractions. The main train stations, Central and Queen Street, are located within a few blocks of central George Square.
  • Take a day out of Glasgow to experience the scenic countryside nearby, most notably at Loch Lomond, where the scenery is a great taster if you don't have time to go all the way to the Highlands. Stop by the Glengoyne Distillery on the way home for a snifter of the best local single malt.
