York Travel Tips

  • Only two hours by train from London, York is a great option for a one- to two-night trip from London or on your way north to Scotland. This small and manageable city offers history dating back to Roman and Viking times, not to mention one of Europe's most impressive cathedrals.
  • The original core of York was fortified by a ring of medieval walls and gates, most of which remains walkable today. It does get very busy with tourists during the day, so plan on strolling the ramparts in the early morning or at dusk just before the gates close.
  • Savor Evensong at York Minster, one of Europe's great Gothic cathedrals. You can climb the central spire for good views over the city.
  • See and touch 300 years of rail history at York's National Railway Museum, the world's biggest railway museum. Kids will also enjoy the small miniature railway exhibit near the museum and main railway station.
  • Take a day trip to Whitby and the seaside for fresh fish 'n' chips and a bite of Dracula (Bram Stoker wrote some of his novel here), accessible by bus from York. If you've got your own wheels, other good area day trips include Castle Howard, Fountainhead Abbey, and the brooding scenery of North York Moors National Park.

One of these, Micklegate, once grimly greeted visitors coming from the south with the heads of traitors. To this day, you can walk on the footpath of the medieval walls. Read More
