Istanbul Gay and Lesbian Travel Tips

Although being gay is not illegal in Istanbul, be discreet about same-sex affection in public. The laws might say one thing, but religious intolerance is still part of life here and part of the reason being out is just now becoming part of the scene.
Cruise the Grand Bazaar, but please watch your ass (literally). Pick pockets abound here and are the main danger for tourists.
Istanbul is magically divided up between Asia and Europe. The European side is where all the famed tourist areas are, but cross the Bospherous bridge to Asia just to say you did it.
Turks do drink. Unlike other Islamic cultures, alcohol is not frowned upon and bars are favorite meeting places. But a great and local vice is the “hubbly bubbly” or the waterpipe, which you can see being smoked in small cafes all over town. A great way to make new friends is to order a black, sweet Turkish coffee and rent a pipe (no pot or hash, just tobacco) for a half hour in a small café.
