Istanbul, divided by the Bosphorus Straits, is the only city in the world located on two continents. Asia lies to the east of the river and Europe to the west. This crossroads position made Istanbul a center of commerce for centuries and also a battleground for empires. First settled by Greeks, later turned into Constantinople, the capital of the Roman Empire in 330, then sacked by European Christian Crusaders in 1204, and conquered by Ottomans in 1453.
