Tobago Beach Travel Tips

  • You'll find the most popular beaches on Tobago along the southwest coast, from Plymouth to Crown Point.
  • Most of Tobago's beaches are blissfully empty, except on Saturdays when beachgoers from neighboring Trinidad traditionally visit for the day.
  • Mount Irvine Hotel Beach welcomes the general public, and there are food vendors and facilities here. Mount Irvine Bay, popular for watersports and with a young crowd, is just a short walk away. One warning: Don't sit under the beach's manchineel trees, since they produce a poisonous sap that irritates the eyes and skin.
  • A great swimming beach is the coconut tree-lined Pigeon Point—gateway to the popular Buccoo Reef—which has turquoise waters and is protected by an offshore reef. There's a small bar and restaurant so you don't need to pack your own supplies.

Tobago is the smaller (27 miles long by 7.5 miles wide) isle of Trinidad and Tobago. It's sleepier, mellower, and—yes—more languid than its flashier sister island 20 miles to the southwest. Tourism on Tobago is a low-key affair, as the island is populated by mom-and-pop lodgings, empty beaches, and a molasses-slow pace; however, that doesn't mean there is nothing of note here. There are excellent snorkeling reefs, like the waist-deep Buccoo Reef, gorgeous bays including Pigeon Point, and exotic sea life. The island also has forests of breadfruit and mango as well as Pigeon Peak Reserve, which dates back to 1765 and is the oldest legally protected reserve in the Western Hemisphere.
