Phuket Snorkeling Travel Tips

  • Especially during the summer monsoon season, don't go into the water if a red beach flag is flying, this indicates dangerous ocean conditions.
  • Although the Phi Phi Islands, located to the southeast of Phuket, are better known as a scuba destination, many outfits offer high-speed boats to take snorkelers on day trips there. Be sure to stop at the white-sand Maya Bay beach where the movie The Beach, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, was filmed.
  • The best months for snorkeling are during Phuket's dry season, from November to March, when sunshine and visibility are at their peak. You may not even feel like swimming, let alone snorkeling, during Phuket's rainy monsoon season that lasts from May through November.
  • Snuba (shallow diving via an air tube on the water's surface) is available in Phuket and the Phi Phi Islands for those snorkelers who want to stay down longer and get a feel for scuba.
