Brazos River Paddling Travel Tips

  • One hundred miles west of Dallas and below Possum Kingdom Lake, the Brazos River runs through the Palo Pinto Mountains (they are actually rugged hills). This part of the river runs through semi-arid landscape with cliffs and beautiful rock formations. The rafting trip is about 11 miles and takes up to nine hours, depending on water levels and paddling skills.
  • Put in at the end of highway 199 (Cox Bend) for a relaxing one-day paddle through rolling hills. This nine-mile trip ends at a takeout at Highway 200, just east of Glen Rose.
  • Lake Whitney Dam offers a great spot to start a paddling trip. Plan to spend five to six hours on the eight-mile paddle. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, lunch, and your fishing gear.
  • For an overnight paddle head to De Cordova Bend Dam at Lake Granbury. This 26-mile trip ends at Highway 199 (Cox Bend). There are no public campgrounds, but there are private ones along the route.
