  • Mellow out in Deep Ellum, Texas's original jazz and blues neighborhood. Musicians like Robert Johnson and Bessie Smith gave way to punk acts in the 1980s, and the area remains a popular spot for nightlife.
  • Go for a walk down Swiss Avenue to see a variety of historically significant architecture, ranging from Victorian mansions to neoclassical bungalows. It's especially worth it during the holiday season, when the houses and streets are elaborately adorned.
  • Pony up the $60 for a prime cut of beef at Bob's Steak & Chop House on Lemmon Avenue. Despite the plain name, it's one of the top three steakhouses in the country.
  • The West End is Dallas's touristy neighborhood and can be a little too Starbucks-and-chain-restaurant for those seeking a real experience. South Dallas, on the other hand, is too real and best avoided at night.
  • Ride the Texas Star, the tallest Ferris wheel in North America at 212 feet. It's located in Fair Park, which hosts the Texas State Fair for three weeks every September and is home to the world's largest collection of Art Deco architecture.
