Zanzibar Scuba Diving Travel Tips

  • Zanzibar is known to have some of the best diving on the eastern coast of Africa, with clear waters and a thriving underwater ecosystem. Expect tropical reef fish, lobsters, turtles, dolphins, and rays, and many uncrowded dive spots.
  • The deep and unspoiled Pemba Channel is home to large fish like barracuda, tuna, and shark. The channel drops off steeply just off the west coast of Pemba Island, but since the isle is undeveloped, most divers stay on the more populated Zanzibar Island (also called Unguja).
  • No need to bring equipment or to stay at a special dive resort—there are a number of dive outfitters in Stone Town on Zanzibar Island, and most resorts can also arrange dives for you. From Stone Town, trips to Prison Island and Chumbe Island Marine Park are especially rewarding because the reefs are protected and preserved.

Zanzibar has some of the best beaches in Africa, with wide swathes of postcard-perfect sand, lined with coconut palms and bleach-white sand bars that mysteriously rise out of the ocean during low tide, making perfect private beaches. Wooden dhow boats drift by, and the coal reefs are excellent for snorkeling and scuba diving. First and foremost, it is nature that lures visitors to these islands, which are surrounded by impossibly sparkling waters and a vibrant underwater world.
