Stockholm Gay and Lesbian Travel Tips

  • Stockholm's cool gay mag QX may be in Swedish only, but they also produce a crucial-for-the-visitor pocket-size English language map, available for free at most LGBT establishments around town.
  • Don’t worry about not speaking Swedish, as nearly every Swede speaks exceptional English. Key Swedish words are simple though: “hej” means the same and is pronounced just like our “hey,” while “ja” (yah) is “yes” and “nej” (nay) is “no.” And locals will definitely appreciate your using the easy “tack” for “thank you.”
  • Sweden is not a Euro-zone country and still uses its kronor, abbreviated SEK. At press time, about 7 SEK = $1.
  • Sweden's high prices can make Stockholm shopping tricky, but the good news is that as a non-Swede, you don't need to pay the hefty 25 percent VAT (Value Added Tax) that's already been factored in. When purchased at a shop displaying a “Tax Free Shopping” sign, anything over 200 SEK is eligible for a VAT refund.

Often wrongly thought to be a blond-haired/blue-eyed only zone, today's Stockholm is increasingly multicultural, adding further variety and buzz to its already world-recognized music, design, and fashion scenes.
