To the west of Stockholm, at a distance of 100km (62 miles), is the old city of Västerås, the capital of the province of Västmanlands. With its population of 125,000 inhabitants, Västerås is the sixth-largest city of Sweden. First mentioned in 1120, the town became the seat of a diocese. Although a thriving industrial city today, Västerås no longer plays such an important role in Swedish society. Visitors come to see the cathedral, one of the most magnificent in Sweden, and to explore the Old Town and other attractions.
