Lidköping really is two towns, divided by the River Lidan. During the Middle Ages, the Old Town (east bank) developed at the river's only fjord as a commercial center with busy river traffic. It received its town charter in 1446. Then, in the 1670s, the Earl of Läckö began systematic construction of a new town on the west bank of the river. The straight streets and rectangular blocks used in laying out the town have been mostly preserved to the present. Notably, the great square, still used as the marketplace for the town and surrounding countryside, was surprisingly modern for the period.
