Mayreau Sailing Highlights

  • Mayreau is the smallest of the traditionally inhabited Grenadine islands, just 1.5 square miles and a population of less than 300 residents (Petit Saint Vincent is smaller, but inhabited only by the owners and staff of the lone resort there).
  • Saline Bay and Saltwhistle Bay are the main anchorages; the latter is calmer and more protected, but the approach is narrower. It's possible to anchor on the windward side, but be especially alert for reefs east of the island.
  • Mayreau has great white-sand beaches and excellent snorkeling; for guided tours, try Dennis' Hideaway (www.dennis-hideaway.com).
  • The island's small village has a unique stone church, superb views, and a wonderfully laid-back atmosphere.

Mayreau Overview

A tiny cay, 4 sq. km (1 1/2 sq. miles) of land, Mayreau is a privately owned island shared by a hotel and a little hilltop village of about 250 inhabitants. It's on the route of the mail boat that plies the seas to and from St. Vincent. It's completely sleepy unless a cruise ship anchors offshore and hustles its passengers over for a lobster barbecue on the beach.
