St. John Scuba Diving Travel Tips

Shallow depths, consistently calm conditions, and healthy, lively reefs make St. John perfect for beginning to intermediate divers. It’s also an ideal spot for uncertified divers to get started with an introductory dive experience or an open-water certification class.
Dives along Grass, Mingo, and Lovango cays in north Pillsbury Sound feature winding sandy pathways along coral mounds and through spur-and-groove reefs, where fish-watchers will find abundant quarry. Keep an eye out for sea turtles grazing on algae and stingrays buried up to their eyeballs in the sand.
The current-swept submarine rock formations at Congo Cay and Carval Rock make good intermediate dives. Here, nurse sharks and octopuses hide out under the ledges, eagle rays cruise the blue water, and—during the summer months—wolf packs of tarpon feed on dense, shimmering schools of baitfish.
