St. Croix Scuba Diving Travel Tips

  • The island's north shore plunges thousands of feet deep just a few hundred yards from the waterline, making wall diving St. Croix's claim to fame. Divers can rent tanks and gear from beachside facilities at Cane Bay, Salt River National Park, or the Carambola Beach Resort and dive many sites from the beach.
  • Rent a car and pick up a dive map of the island for self-guided access to all of the beach dive sites along the north shore. Taxis around the sizeable island are unreliable and expensive, and a vehicle allows for a flexible schedule and diving freedom. Alternately, local dive boats service many of the same sites—about $70 for two dives—and professional guides will make dive planning and site navigation a breeze.
  • The walls provide a lot of variety, but don't miss St. Croix's other underwater secrets. Critter hunters can find sea horses, frogfish, and other macro-species at the Frederiksted Pier, and the Butler Bay shipwrecks offer a nice change of scenery after diving the reefs.
