At the east side of the reef, snorkelers can follow the marked, underwater Buck Island Trail through shallow coral gardens that thrive under full protection from the U.S. National Park System. With some of the best underwater visibility—100 feet or more—and the largest living reef in the Caribbean, St. Croix’s north shore offers unlimited snorkeling opportunities right from the beach. Take a day to explore the more protected beaches on the island’s east end. Grapetree Bay offers good snorkeling opportunities, and adventurers can hike the steep trails to the south side of Point Udall and have the snorkeling all to themselves. Saint Croix Travel Guide
At 84 square miles, St. Croix is the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands. At the east end—which actually is the easternmost point of the United States—the terrain is rocky and arid. The west end is more lush and even includes a small "rain forest" of mango, mahogany, tree ferns, and dangling lianas. Between the two extremes are beautiful beaches, rolling hills, pastures, and, increasingly, miles of condos.
