  • Keep your clothes on—public nudity is prohibited in the Virgin Islands.
  • Grab a drink at the bar across from Cane Bay Beach. Shady trees, excellent snorkeling and diving, and restroom facilities make this spot the most popular on the island.
  • Carry cash. While Saint Croix's beaches are public, neighboring hotels may charge a small fee for use of resort facilities.
  • Float over to Buck Island, a top snorkeling spot in Saint Croix. Sign up early and bring a few refreshments for the half-day excursion.

At 84 square miles, St. Croix is the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands. At the east end -- which actually is the easternmost point of the United States -- the terrain is rocky and arid.
