Cape Town Surfing Travel Tips

  • The cape region is famous for surfers, with more than 20 surf spots and consistent winds and waves. Surfing is good year round, but the winter months of June through August see the biggest swells, due to storms between the cape and Antarctica.
  • Visit for the annual Red Bull Big Wave Africa contest at the height of winter in late July. Surfers from around the world ride big ones at Dungeons, a surf spot in Hout Bay.
  • A great local resource for surf advice and organized surf safaris is Cape Town Surf Adventures, located at Hout Bay Beach.
