Grahamstown was named after Col. John Graham, who established a garrison here in 1815 with orders to drive the Xhosa eastward over the Fish Rivera ruthless expulsion that was to spark the 100-year Frontier War. Reminders of its English colonial past can be seen everywhere: streets lined with charming Georgian and Victorian buildings, the only Victorian camera obscura in the Southern Hemisphere, one of South Africa's oldest English-speaking universities, and a number of highly regarded English-style private boarding schools dating back to 1885. But with the old Fish River frontier a mere 60km (37 miles) east, signs of the impoverished Xhosa community are equally visible, both on the streets and on the hills surrounding the valley.
