Seychelles Sailing Travel Tips

With most of its islands outside of the Indian Ocean cyclone belt, the Seychelles offer year-round sailing in calm waters.
The two prevailing wind patterns in the Seychelles are defined by the warmer and wetter northwest winds from October to April, and the cooler and drier southeast winds from May to September. However, the transitional periods from March to April and October to November can mean little to no wind.
Anchorages tend to be better during the southeast trade winds, from May to September, than the northwest trade winds, from October to April.
Although the once-strict controls on yachting among the Seychelles have been lifted, all yachts visiting the Outer Islands need to be of a higher specified class with appropriate captain and crew, because of fringing reefs and shallow waters.

The Seychelles come in two types: 41 granite islands, known as the Inner Islands, and 74 coral islands, called the Outer Islands. Most of the population lives on the Inner Islands, while the Outer Islands are left wild and untouched by civilization. The Seychelles are heralded for their extensive conservation efforts, and a good chunk of the island group is made up of national parks and marine reserves, including six national marine parks and two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Aldabra, the world's largest raised coral atoll and home to giant land tortoises, and Praslin's Vallée de Mai, a lush land-based ecosystem.
