La Petite Cote Beach Travel Tips

  • The rainy season for La Petite Cote is roughly July through September—also the hottest and most humid time of year—and some hotels offer discounts during this season. November through February is the busier time of year, when many Europeans visit.
  • Waves are often calmer for swimming in the summer months; the water is typically around 70 degrees throughout the year.
  • Ask your resort if they provide transportation from the Dakar airport to La Petite Cote, an hour or two away. If they don't, the quickest and safest mode of transport is the sept place taxi: Peugeots that seat seven (you usually share your ride with other passengers). Avoid the overcrowded minibuses.
  • French women go topless on the beaches of La Petite Cote, but outside of this area it's important to dress modestly in respect to local Muslim customs.

Beach Overview: La Petite Cote, Senegal

Mostly built up in the 1980s, La Petite Cote ("The Little Coast") is the premier beach destination in the West African nation of Senegal. Running south from the Cap Vert Peninsula to the Sine-Saloum Delta (home to the stunning Parc National du Delta du Saloum), over a dozen sophisticated lodges and resorts front a stunningly clean beach, where fisherman bring their colorful boats to shore with fresh fish. La Petite Cote—specifically the Saly area of the coast—is the most popular tourist spot in the country and has the best selection of hotels in Senegal. European tourists while away the days, particularly in the winter, at this mellow, low-key, low-rise area that feels miles away from everything. Read More
