Sawtooth National Forest Travel Tips

  • The Sawtooth National Forest encompasses 2.1-million acres of the most magnificent and wildest country available in the United States this side of Alaska. Within the forest, you'll also find protected wilderness areas and national recreation areas.
  • Find excellent and less-crowded trails winding through the Pioneer Mountains east of Sun Valley, the second highest range in the state. Access an extensive trail system from the Federal Gulch Campground off of East Fork Road, six miles south of Ketchum.
  • Sun Valley Trekking in Hailey operates six backcountry yurts in the Sawtooth National Forest that are ideal destinations for snowshoers. Rentals and multi-day, guided trips are available.
  • The congressionally designated 754,000-acre Sawtooth National Recreation Area is a part of the Sawtooth National Forest. This area offers outstanding opportunities for recreation and viewing wildlife in a pastoral setting indicative of the old western way of life.
  • In general, it is good practice to contact the Forest Service before any Sawtooth pack trip. Even aside from weed-free hay and stipulations of group sizes, segments of the recreation and wilderness areas have specific requirements for tethering and feeding stock.
