  • Narragansett's Point Judith became a popular Rhode Island surf spot due to its diversity in waves. Swells approach land at an angle, breaking gradually and allowing for longer rides. A word of caution: rough waves and undertow and a rocky, slippery shoreline make Point Judith unsuitable for beginners.
  • Novice surfers looking for a sweet spot should try Easton's Beach. The three-quarters-of-a-mile long crescent shaped swath of shoreline works great for less experienced surfers. Swells approach land head-on, and though rides are short, they'll satisfy anyone searching for a relaxing ride.
  • For those who want to learn, Island Sports offers windsurfing camps and surfing schools for children and adults. The headquarters is located in Middletown, roughly seven miles from Newport. During the lesson, you'll surf with views of small islands and beautiful sailboats.

Newport Travel Guide

"City by the Sea" is the unimaginative nickname an early resident unloaded on Newport. At least it was accurate, because for a time during the Colonial period it rivaled Boston and even New York as a center of New World trade and prosperity.
