Newport Scuba Diving Travel Tips

  • Located upon 100-foot high granite cliffs, Fort Wetherill State Park was once a coastal defense battery and training camp. The area lures fans of Tall Ship events and America's Cup Races, as the views are stunning. Scuba divers also frequent the area with their diving clubs from New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and of course Rhode Island using the boat ramp year round. Scuba training often takes place in the right cove, but on the left the wall drops 70 feet where divers may spot anemones.
  • The Dumplings, a Rhode Island dive site, featuring anemone-covered rocks and an abundance of lobster, crab, and tautog. Because the current can be strong, the site is better suited for more experienced divers. A great spot for a night dive if the tides are just right.
  • Newport has tons of dive charters and the location is perfect for wreck diving. Places like Newport Diving Center offer instruction. Call for rates.

Newport Travel Guide

"City by the Sea" is the unimaginative nickname an early resident unloaded on Newport. At least it was accurate, because for a time during the Colonial period it rivaled Boston and even New York as a center of New World trade and prosperity.
