  • Talk in hushed tones while browsing through the Providence Athenaeum, a Greek Revival building built in 1838 and home to one of the oldest library collections in the United States.
  • Know the lingo—Rhode Islanders speak with a vocabulary all their own. A water fountain is a "bubbler," submarine sandwiches are "grinders," and a milkshake is a "cabinet," to name a few.
  • Don't miss the Italian food in Providence. While one might think the go-to cuisine here is seafood, a heavy contingent of Italian immigrants means great pasta spots. Try the low-key Cassarino's on Atwell Avenue.
  • Hop the scenic ferry to Newport (instead of driving), where you can tour world-famous mansions like The Breakers and Beechwood. The ferry crossing takes just over an hour.

Providence delights in its sobriquet, "Renaissance City." No question, the city is moving on up, counter to the trend of so many small and midsize New England cities. Money magazine even declared it the "Best Place to Live in the East." Revival is in the air and prosperity is returning, evident in the resurgent "downcity" business district. Rivers have been uncovered to form canals and waterside walkways; distressed buildings of the last century have been reclaimed; and continued construction has added a new hotel behind Union Station as well as Providence Place, a monster mall that brings national department stores to town for the first time.
