Ohiopyle State Park Active and Adventure Travel Tips

  • Hike a section of the 70-mile Laurel Highlands National Scenic Trail, which begins at the 1,000-foot-deep Conemaugh Gorge near Johnstown and ends at Ohiopyle State Park's rugged Youghiogheny (pronounced "Yock-uh-gain-ee") River Gorge. Eight backcountry campgrounds (with shelters, water, and tent pads) are spaced every eight to ten miles, set back from the trail to enhance the wilderness experience. (Reservations are required.)
  • Bike the 27-mile stretch of the Youghiogheny River Rail Trail, a fun route that hugs the "Yough" between Confluence and Connellsville. Enjoy scenic river overlooks, waterfalls, and quiet passage through rural towns. This forms a section of the 150-mile Great Allegheny Passage, which together with the C&O Canal towpath, connects Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., through a continuous 316-mile non-motorized corridor.
  • Clamber up Sugarloaf Knob along the steep, rocky 3.4-mile Baughman Trail, where you'll enjoy the best views of the Lower Yough and Middle Yough from the overlook at Baughman Rock.
  • Run the Class III and IV rapids of the Lower Yough as it bumps its way seven miles downstream from Ohiopyle Falls to the Bruner Run take-out. A number of local outfitters offer guided rafting trips, including Ohiopyle-based Wilderness Voyageurs and White Water Adventurers. For more placid floats, the Middle Yough offers easy flatwater for tubing and canoeing.
  • Hike the lovely Meadow Run Trail, an easy three-mile route that winds its way past a natural rock slide, several swimming holes, stands of mountain laurel, and countless places to picnic and snooze on a summer afternoon.

Ohiopyle State Park

An exhilarating park to see and experience, more than 14 miles of the Youghiogheny River Gorge churns though the heart of Ohiopyle. The famous Lower Yough, below the scenic Ohiopyle Falls, provides some of the best whitewater boating in the Eastern US. You can also hike the continuous 28 mile Youghiogheny River Trail and view the new connector, a 620-foot long bridge. Read More
