  • Voted on the of 50 best rides in America by Outside magazine, the 25-mile Lehigh Gorge Trail is a rail-to-trails route that traces the Lehigh River from White Haven to Jim Thorpe. With a constant downhill grade all the way to Jim Thorpe, this one won't take the wind out of your sails. Several outfitters offer shuttle services to bring you and your bike back to the start—unless you're feeling energetic enough to bag the 50-mile round trip.
  • Draw straws to designate the unlucky driver, and then set off along the Lehigh Valley Wine Trail, which passes nine family-owned wineries in the rolling farmland of southeastern Pennsylvania. Sample from award-winning whites, pinots, and chardonnays, and try varietals such as chambourcin grown here. Then sleep it off at any of the reasonably priced B&Bs in the area.
  • Rent a canoe, kayak, raft, or tube to float sections of the wide, lazy Upper Delaware River. Point Pleasant Canoe & Tube in Point Pleasant offers shuttle service and tube rentals for small and large parties (and yes, we mean parties). If it's solitude you're seeking, you can canoe-camp along the Middle Delaware National Scenic River, a 40-mile stretch of river that cuts through the dramatic Delaware Water Gap.
  • One of the better places to ski or snowboard in the Mid-Atlantic region is Blue Mountain Ski Area in Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains. Check out novice, intermediate, and expert trails (30 in all), and don't miss the resort's racing events—including its cardboard-box float derby.
