Pennsylvania Travel Tips

  • Considered his architectural masterpiece, Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater in the Allegheny Mountains in Mill Run (tel. 724/329-8501; www.paconserve.org/fallingwaterhome.htm) was completed in 1939. Built over a waterfall, this magnificent multi-tiered modern achievement is the only Wright-designed home open to the general public, and it still holds much of the original Wright-designed furniture, as well as original artworks by Pablo Picasso and Diego Rivera.
  • In north-central Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Wilds (www.dcnr.state.pa.us/forestry/oldgrowth/pinecreek.aspx) encompasses 2 million acres and 12 county's worth of forest and public land, which is home to the largest free-roaming elk herd in the northeastern United States. Particularly great is Pine Creek Gorge, aka Pennsylvania's Grand Canyon, a national forest with a spectacular 42-mile hiking and biking trail.
  • About 10 miles from the capital Harrisburg is Hershey (www.hersheypa.com), America's one and only chocolate city. Named for Milton Hershey, the man who headquartered his chocolate company here (now the largest in the country), the town literally smells like its name suggests. It is home to all things chocolate, including the Hersheypark amusement park, the Hershey Chocolate Spa (where you can soak in the stuff), and Hershey's Chocolate World, which offers chocolate tours.

The Keystone State, so named for its central location among the original 13 colonies, has quite a lot to offer visitors. Of course, save for the Steelers in Pittsburgh, it is most famous for the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia. And Philly is indeed a great town full of all the excitement, struggle, creativity, ambition, and history that exists in any good center of urban life. Within a small radius of a few blocks, you can see the Liberty Bell in all its cracked glory, traipse down the same cobblestone streets where Benny Franklin himself set his buckle-shoed feet, and then slide on over for just about the most anti-Colonial meal you could find at the massive, modern Buddakan restaurant, with its great golden Buddha and outrageous and much-lauded Asian fare.
