Palau Scuba Diving Travel Tips

  • While diving is excellent year round, the best time to go is between late November and early June, the drier and sunnier time of year.
  • Divers from around the world come to Palau for its abundant underwater life, but the islands are also home to some of the best wreck diving anywhere, with a large collection of intact World War II shipwrecks and plane wrecks.
  • The majority of diving in Palau consists of drift diving along the dramatic walls, plateaus, and coral gardens of the island group's outer barrier reef. A boat follows you along on the surface while you dive and meets you upon ascent.
  • No need to pack underwater camera gear: Sam's Tours in Koror is equipped with state-of-the-art Apple iMac workstations, Apple Aperture image management software, Adobe Photoshop Elements, and the latest Canon Powershot SD850 digital cameras and Canon ZR830 mini digital video cameras, complete with underwater housings.
  • Come for Shark Week every March, co-hosted by the Micronesian Shark Foundation. You can visit famous sites like Blue Corner, Peleliu Corner, and Shark City.
  • A nice way to combine sailing with scuba diving is by chartering the Eclipse for a week through Palau Sea Ventures. Eclipse is a 48-foot sloop that comes with its own captain, dive master, and equipment.

Beach Overview: Palau

The Republic of Palau, located in the western Pacific, southeast of The Philippines, makes up one of the most unique island groups in the world. Mushroom-shaped limestone isles smothered in green look as though they were scooped up with a spoon and plopped into the neon-green and blue waters. Around every turn, you'll find bleach-white beaches devoid of human footprints. If you don't mind the somewhat steep prices and the time it takes to travel to this remote Pacific outpost, you will be rewarded with one of the most interesting and dramatically scenic island groups in the world.
